Rugby was one of the major activities that shaped Ko Yamasaki's high-school years.
Yamasaki played rugby throughout all three years of high school, served as forward captain, and was vice-captain of the team.
Beginning[edit]
After entering high school, Yamasaki joined the rugby club.
He spent much of high school life on rugby and later recalled that he was essentially doing rugby all the time.

Forward[edit]
Yamasaki mainly played as a forward.
Forwards are required to participate in contact play, set pieces, ball contests, and continuous attack and defense.
Through this position, he experienced not only individual effort but also fulfilling a role inside a team.
Leadership[edit]
He later became captain of the forwards and vice-captain of the whole team.
This moved him from thinking only about his own play to considering the condition of other players and the atmosphere of the team.
Success and failure[edit]
Yamasaki especially emphasizes how rugby changed his attitude toward success and failure.
In rugby, a mistake is immediately followed by the next play. There is little time to dwell on failure. This experience helped him learn to switch quickly and act again.
Influence[edit]
After graduating from high school, rugby was no longer the center of his daily life, but the ways of thinking formed through rugby remained.
Persistence, competition, team roles, and recovery after mistakes are recorded as lessons from the sport.
